Based on a Q&A-style interview developed by the CAAE Communications Committee, we're pleased to present this month’s spotlight of CAAE member Laura Heilenday (Duke University), compilation courtesy of Raphe Beck (University of Oregon).

Name: Laura Heilenday

Institution: Duke University

Q: Are you new to alumni relations, new to your institution, neither, or both?

A: New to alumni relations/higher education/not-for-profit, though longtime volunteer for Duke (and also am a Double-Dukie married to a Double-Dukie)

Q: Best perk of the job so far:

A: Men’s basketball season tickets!

Q: Biggest challenge so far:

A: Living 4 hours from my office and being on campus weekly – but we’ll move from Maryland to Durham in Summer 2025.

Q: If you needed to, could you sing your school’s fight song and/or alma mater?

A: Yes, but I won’t do it out loud solo, so please don’t ask. ????

Q: What would it surprise people to know about you?

A: This sounds terrible, but people always seem pleasantly surprised and delighted when they hear me curse (so I guess my foul language is surprising?).

Q: Who would be your dream dinner guests?

A: My mom and dad (who passed away in May 2020).

Q: When I’m not on the job, you’ll find me…

A: Watching my kids play sports, running on a trail, tasting wine, or at a great restaurant for dinner!
